London Welsh boss Jones happy to take Gardens point

London Welsh boss Lyn Jones felt his side were more than worthy of the point they gained from their game at Saints on Saturday.

Welsh picked up a losing bonus point as they were just edged out in the war of attrition at Franklin’s Gardens.

A penalty try and a score from Samoan wing Ken Pisi, along with 13 points from the boot of Ryan Lamb saw Saints to victory.

But they were given a bloody nose by Welsh, who battled to the end to pick up something from the game and further their bid for Premiership survival.

“We wanted to leave here with something, and we did so,” said Jones. “I was pleased with the boys’ attitude and their approach to the game.

“Northampton have a huge reputation in the scrum and we took them on there. We won some and they won some, that tended to be the game.

“They got the edge on us at the kicking battle but we worked hard, we stuck in and I thought we deserved at least a point.”

Jones feels his men will gain huge belief from their gritty showing against a Saints side who had lost their previous three Premiership games.

And he felt Welsh more than matched their opponents in rain-soaked conditions at the Gardens.

“We grew in confidence and just two or three errors from individuals cost us field position and the pressure came on but we’ll get confidence from our strong performance,” he said.

“You could argue we had the better of their pack but they’re a solid outfit and with the weather conditions it was a war of attrition for both sides.

“We had quite a lot of pressure and I’m happy with the point, but disappointed to lose.”
