A DEFENDANT has denied trying to commit a sexually-motivated abduction of a 23-year-old student in Northampton.
Andrew Roberts, aged 57, pleaded not guilty to the two charges he faces when he appeared from custody at Northampton Crown Court.
He is charged with attempting to kidnap the woman and trying to commit a sexual offence on Sunday, February 26, close to the cashpoint of the Co-op store in Semilong Road, Semilong. The woman, who cannot be named, had been to the cash machine at 9.15pm when she was approached by a man asking for directions.
He is then alleged to have said: “I’m looking for a lady. How much do you charge?”
Roberts, of Pound Lane, Moulton, Northampton is accused of grabbing hold of her wrist and trying to drag her away.
Magistrates have heard the alleged abduction attempt was brought to an end when a passing van driver intervened.
Roberts, who only spoke to confirm his name and enter not guilty pleas to both charges, maintains it is a case of mistaken identity.
Judge Rupert Mayo said: “Your trial will take place in July, about four weeks time; and in the meantime, you will remain in custody.”
