It is believed the man, who police say is in a serious condition, was attacked by a group of men in Gordon Street, Semilong, Northampton, at around 5am.
He was punched and stabbed, a police spokesman told the Chronicle & Echo.
Officers have sealed off part of the area as they continue to investigate the attack.
Early indications suggest the man knew the gang of people who attacked him.
Police have appealed for a motorist who may have driven past the scene and disturbed the attackers to contact police.
