Pregnant women have a bonus two-week opportunity to protect themselves and their unborn children from influenza at Northampton General Hospital.

Health bosses warned that flu is more than just a common cold and can be a very serious illness that can cause harm to women and their babies.

Anne Thomas, head of midwifery at NGH said: “It is recommended that all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy, get the seasonal flu vaccine.

“This is because pregnant women are more prone to complications from flu, which can cause very serious illness for both the mother and her baby.”

From Monday December 3 until December 15, women coming to NGH for routine antenatal appointments will be offered the vaccination.

The hospital’s Antenatal Clinic and Maternity Day Unit will also offer pregnant women the flu jab on a drop-in basis.

On the hospital’s own map, the Antenatal Clinic can be found in Area K and the Maternity Day Unit in Area L.

Sessions in the Antenatal Clinic will run from 8.30am until midday Monday to Thursday and from 2pm to 4.30pm on Friday afternoon.

The Maternity Day Unit sessions are open from 1pm to 4pm Monday to Wednesday. On Thursday the session is from 8.30am to midday; on Friday from 8.30am to 11.30am; and on Saturday from 11am to 1.30pm.
