Former Cobblers goalkeeper Mark Bunn made his first Premier League start for Norwich City in midweek and Canaries boss Chris Hughton says he has ‘no fears’ about his ability to fill the void left by the injured John Ruddy.
Bunn moved to Carrow Road from Blackburn Rovers in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £1m, of which Town received a percentage.
The stopper, now 28, was given the nod in goal for Norwich - who also have former Sixfields players Bradley Johnson and Steve Morison on the books, ex-manager Colin Calderwood as assistant manager and former Town midfielder Paul Trollope as first team coach - on Wednesday night and he did not disappoint in a 1-1 draw at Southampton.
It followed on from Bunn’s appearance as a second half substitute in Norwich’s 1-1 draw at Everton last Saturday after Ruddy was forced off 10 minutes before the end of the game at Goodison Park.
Ruddy is likely to be out for the immediate future with a thigh injury but Hughton has every confidence in Bunn, who saved a crucial last-gasp penalty from Clint Dempsey as Norwich knocked Tottenham out of the Capital One Cup last month.
“Mark is a good goalkeeper, and if it is a case that he comes in for whatever period of time, then we have no fears about that,” Hughton said.
“When we brought him in originally that was the exact reason, because of his experience.
“Whether John plays really depends on the scan.
“He is reasonably sore at the moment. We certainly wouldn’t want to rule anything out until we know for definite.
“There is a doubt, but we haven’t given up any hope.”
Norwich are at home to Sunderland on Sunday afternoon (ko 4pm).
