The M1 motorway has fully reopened having closed for more than five hours after a truck shed dozens of meat carcasses across the carriageway near Northampton.

The southbound carriageway was closed from junction 15a to junction 16 at 11.20am.

Despite the motorway being partially reopened earlier this afternoon, the road was not fully open until shortly before 5pm, police have said.

Traffic was diverted while debris was cleared.

One driver posted a picture of the scene on Twitter, where several people have given their reaction to the incident.

Pete Martin said: “Got held up briefly on the M1 due to a lorry literally falling apart and spilling joints of meat all over the carriageway.”

Helen Rudd said: ”M1 closed. A massive crash involving a lorry transporting meat. There’s carcasses all over the road.”

Bryony Applegate said: “Just saw the whole of a lorry fall apart and loads of meat spread across the M1.”
