Nine people have been arrested by Northamptonshire Police during the first five days of this year’s winter drink-drive campaign.

The crackdown, which runs from December 1 to January 1, saw 117 people arrested last year and police chiefs say officers are showing “real enthusiasm” targeting people who get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol.

Insp Nigel Rickaby, from the Operations Tactical Unit, said: “Our message is clear - the only safe limit is none. If you are going out and know you will be drinking alcohol, nominate someone who will not drink and will drive. Alternatively, arrange for someone who has not drunk alcohol to pick you up or take public transport.

“The potential consequences of deciding to drink and drive are catastrophic. Not only could you be arrested and required to attend court, you could lose your drivers’ licence and as a consequence of that, your job. Of course, there is also the chance that your decision to drink and drive could result in your death, or someone else’s.”

Across Northamptonshire there will be an increased number of breath testsand officers will be taking part in more patrols, including early in the morning.

He added: “There is a particular focus on motorists who get behind the wheel the morning after drinking a large amount of alcohol and who do not realise they are over the drink drive limit. We are also targeting young drivers, aged between 17 and 24, as last year’s figures show drivers in that age bracket fail more breath tests than any other age category.”

To report a suspected drink drive in confidence, call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615, fill out the online form at www.northants.police.uk/drivewatch or if you think someone is drink or drug driving now, call 999.
