Aidy Boothroyd believes Lewis Wilson’s loan spell at Kettering Town will provide the young striker with ‘the best of both worlds’.
Wilson has played three games for crisis club Poppies so far, all of which have ended in defeat, and will line up for the club when they play Chesham on Sunday.
It promises to be a tough couple of months at Kettering for Wilson, who enjoyed his best performance for the Cobblers in the 3-3 FA Cup first-round replay at Bradford City in November.
But Boothroyd is hoping that steep learning curve will be pivotal in the development of a player who he signed from United Counties League side Newport Pagnell Town.
“Lewis is a young player that I feel needs to get some match fitness and we can’t guarantee that here because of the situation we are in at the moment,” said the Cobblers boss.
“With the squad we’ve got we want to make sure that everybody is fit and available, but sometimes there will be players who won’t feature as much and so we need to get those players playing some football somewhere.
“It does our neighbours a bit of a favour as well and it will certainly toughen him up.
“That is part and parcel of a player’s armoury, they’ve got to be able to deal with the physical side of the game.
“He’s training with us every day and he’s playing matches at the weekend so it’s the best of both worlds.”
