Delights of family ‘glamping’ in the wild, wide open space

When the team behind Wild Luxury came up with the name for their business, they pretty much hit the nail on the head.

While not quite as wild as the Masai Mara, the site of the company’s wonderful safari tents in deepest Norfolk are about as far off the beaten track you are going to get within a couple of hours of Northamptonshire.

And it has to be said that the aforementioned tents are nothing if not luxurious.

If you have ever wondered what ‘glamping’ – glamorous camping – was all about, then take a peak at the Wild Luxury website.

The bottom line is simple: these are fantastically well-equipped luxury tents complete with hot showers, stoves, and virtually all mod cons.

There is no television or radio, but why would you want one to ruin the atmosphere in the beautiful open, unspoilt countryside? I like to think we were pretty much the perfect family to put the accommodation and location through its paces during our stay.

I was joined by my three-year-old daughter and, at the time, heavily pregnant wife.

Now when you have a youngster in tow, you need space, and the Wild Luxury site has it in spades.

There is endless room for young ones to play without unduly interfering with your neighbours, who are a considerable distance from your own temporary home.

And there is the fantastic sleeping cupboard which our daughter adored. Having ticked the “what to do with a restless child” box, the Wild Luxury accommodation then hit the spot for the slightly world-weary worker and his pregnant wife. You wouldn’t normally take a woman due to give birth in eight weeks camping, but here it was never going to be an issue.

The luxury lodges are fully equipped with great kitchens, warm ranges, comfortable bedrooms, flushing loos and power showers. In fact, our lodge was just about perfect for the get-away-from-it-all break that we wanted before the chaos of baby number two began (just four days after returning, as it happens).

Wild Luxury is not part of any farm-stay farmyard franchise and if you go you will truly appreciate why.

Throw in the biggest skies in England, incredible local wildlife, great adventure days and some of the best beaches in England right on the doorstep, and this has to be among the best camping holiday locations you could ever wish to find. Our stay was marked by the most magnificent storm and to sit on the veranda at dusk, wine in hand and watch the huge clouds and rain roll in off the sea without a building in sight was spectacular.

Whether you are a couple seeking a little bit of romance or a family looking for adventure, this is a fantastic holiday experience.

Wild Luxury lodges offer over 600 square feet of top quality safari style accommodation. Kitchens are fitted with a wood-burning range cooker, sink, dresser and gas stove. Sleeping accommodation is cosy with a master bedroom, twin/bunk second bedroom and ‘sleeping cupboard’ with room for two young children. There is also a dining area, verandas, private loo and hot camp shower. Cutlery and utensils is provided. There is a small site pantry for any provisions that you may need. The owners can also provide meals that you can either cook yourself or simply put on the range and warm up for a delicious instant treat.
