Repair work causes power cut in more Northampton homes

A total of 17 more homes in Northampton have no electricity following work to restore power elsewhere.

A British Red Cross vehicle has been mobilised to Delapre Crescent Road to hand out hot drinks to residents after the latest in a series of electricity problems in Delapre and Far Cotton since Friday.

Western Power Distribution said this afternoon’s problem was caused by a cable being badly damaged when engineers were fixing a back-up generator that was providing back-up power to homes in the St Leonard’s Road area.

Those homes had their power restored at 1pm, but Delapre Crescent Road was immediately affected instead.

A spokeswoman said: “We apologise to our customers that these problems seem to have snowballed in the last few days.

“We know the nights are cold at the moment so we are trying to help using the British Red Cross team.”

The generator was itself brought in after power cuts on Friday night and 11 hours on Saturday.

Although most of the 3,700 homes affected were only without power for five minutes, the homes near St Leonard’s Road were being supplied by the generator’s back-up power.

However at 7am this morning, the generator also failed.

The latest problem in Delapre Crescent Road is expected to be rectified by 7pm today.
