Up to 20 jobs could be lost at Northampton Borough council as part of wider plans to save £1.9 million over the next financial year.

Cuts could also be made to CCTV cameras, with 14 expected to be switched off across the town, although council tax rates would be frozen.

Announcing the council’s budget plans on Wednesday morning, the leader of the authority, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm) said: “This is a very challenging time and our focus has been to ensure the organisation is as lean and efficient as it can be while maintaining the skills and expertise we need to drive regeneration and lead the town’s future prosperity.

A large part of the £1.9 million savings would come from the outsourcing of back-office facilities at the Guildhall - a move which will save the council £415,000.

The council will also try to find ways of raising money by allowing companies to sponsor events such as the St Crispin Street Fair and the annual Christmas Frost Fair.

The budget plans are now out to public consultation with a final decision expected to be made in February.
