A man whose body was found in the Grand Union Canal at Crick Wharf was a boat owner who did not die in suspicious circumstances, police believe.

A member of the public made the discovery this morning, metres from The Moorings restaurant on West Haddon Road.

The man was white, aged 63, and from Suffolk, police revealed this afternoon.

Officers carried out enquiries near The Moorings, known by locals as Edwards, and talked to boat owners in the area.

Their search of the canal and recovery of the body took about four hours.

Locals said they pulled out several bicycles and that the man appeared to have suffered an injury to the front of his head.

A workmate of the man who found the body said: “He was under the ice so he must have been there all night.

“Whatever caused him to fall in, he wouldn’t have had much chance in the water with the temperatures so cold.”

A police spokesman said: “There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and we are preparing a report for the coroner.”
