Boothroyd unhappy with Plainmoor point

Aidy Boothroyd watched his players score an injury-time goal to draw at Torquay and afterwards said he was not satisfied with the result.

Kelvin Langmead rattled in at the second attempt to secure a 1-1 draw at Plainmoor after former Cobblers loanee Ryan Jarvis had put the home side ahead.

The central defender suffered a facial injury - initially believed to be a broken nose - in the act of scoring a goal that ends a run of three straight defeats for the team.

But despite that, Boothroyd was not happy to only take a point from the long trip to Devon, feeling the home side were fortunate not to concede more than just Langmead’s late strike.

“I’m not satisfied with the result because although Torquay are a good side and one very similar to us, I thought their goal led a charmed life,” he said.

“Our set plays really caused problems for them and our front players were a real handful for them all afternoon.

“Clarke (Carlisle) and Kelvin Langmead were superb for the cause at the back, Anthony Charles did okay at left-back and our midfield was very solid.

“We deserved at least a point in this game, even though we fell behind in it. We withstood a barrage and that’s all part of growing and developing as a team.

“The weather and the pitch were a real drain on the players and to dig deep and keep playing for the final 20 minutes was fantastic.”

One blot on the Town copybook at Torquay was a fifth booking of the season for leading goalscorer Adebayo Akinfenwa, who will miss Saturday’s home game against Aldershot as a result.

Akinfenwa was regularly punished for very minor indiscretions throughout the game, something Boothroyd feels is a byproduct of his size and power.

“I used to get a lot of free-kicks when I was playing because I was only five foot eight and the referees used to feel sorry for me,” he said.

“When you’re big and strong and you’re a real handful you don’t get very much at all. A lot of referees look at him and Clive Platt and think they’re a booking but they’re not, they’re just competitive.”
