Northampton is one of 300 markets taking part in the national Love Your Local Market campaign inspired by Mary Portas.

The two-week campaign runs until July 8 and aims to attract new market traders and highlight the importance markets play in the local community and as the focal point for a town.

To support the campaign Northampton Borough Council has launched a recruitment drive to attract new traders to its historic Market Square and will be hosting a special celebration day on Saturday, July 7 with family activities and entertainment. Market traders will be joining in the fun and dressing up their stalls for the day.

Graham Wilson, chief executive of the National Association of British Markets Authorities, said: “This is the biggest national markets event for a generation and there is a real opportunity for markets to show what they can do for job creation and bringing town centres to life.”

Councillor Tim Hadland, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member responsible for markets, said: “Northampton Market Square is a great place for people to meet, shop and relax. The variety of stalls and lively entertainment on offer are a real draw for families and visitors and make the experience of shopping more of an event than a chore.

“Markets are a great British tradition and Saturday, July 7 is a day of celebration in Northampton. Mark the date on your calendar and come along to shop and enjoy the fun, games and entertainment.”

Love Your Local Market will be celebrated in Northampton’s historic Market Square on Saturday, July 7. Anyone thinking of owning their own business by setting up a market stall can call Northampton 838444 or email markets@northampton.gov.uk.
