Two men have died in a head-on collision on the A6 bypass near Burton Latimer taking the number of fatalities in Northamptonshire over the festive period to five.

The accident happened about half a mile north of the Higham Road junction with the A6 on Sunday December 30 at 11.45am when the men, travelling in a blue Vauxhall Tigra, were involved in a smash with a grey Fiat Punto.

Both men in the Tigra died in the collision. Two women in the Punto were taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries.

PC Dave Lee, of Northamptonshire Police’s road unit, said both the men who died were ‘local to the area’ and that their relatives had been informed.

The A6 was closed for several hours between the Higham Road junction and junction 10a of the A14 while police officers carried out an investigation.

Traffic was diverted through the centre of Burton Latimer during the investigation.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters had been asked to attend the accident scene after receiving a request from ambulance crews.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has information is asked to phone Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111222.
