Members of a cricket club have launched a fundraising appeal to build a new pavilion and safeguard the future of the 154 year-old club.
Uffington Cricket Club, based in Greatford Road, needs to raise about £15,000 to build a new pavilion to replace the current crumbling building which has been used for about 15 years.
The current pavilion is made up of three old mobile school classrooms which have been patched together. Over the years the weather has taken its told and the building now has a rotten roof and vegetation growing into each changing room.
Playing member of the club Dean Cornish said: “If a club doesn’t have facilities it will die. The club been here for more than 150 years and we want it to be here for another 150.
“At the moment it is not a nice place for visiting teams to come to or for our players, there isn’t even any electricity.
“We visit some lovely places when we play away in and it is a bit embarrassing to have people here.”
The players at the club, which competes in Rutland League Division Three, have agreed to raise the money themselves, with each player being given a personal target of £1,000 to raise in a year.
About £2,500 has already been raised toward their total. Including £800 raised by two players, Will Fry and Simon Larter, at the Great Eastern Run.
A race night at the village hall raised £200 and a tombola stall at the Stamford Christmas market brought in £250.
