The number of applications for places at the University of Northampton “reflects the national picture” of being six per cent down this year, latest figures have shown.

New national UCAS figures show that applications received by December 17 to start degree courses in the autumn were 6.3 per cent down compared to the same point in 2011.

Among students in England alone, applications have fallen by 6.5 per cent, with 229,932 applications, compared to 245,882 the year before.

Paul Tebbutt, admissions assistant registrar at the University of Northampton, said the change in the number of applications received by the university “reflected the national picture”.

He said: “UCAS stress that December can be particularly affected by calendar effects such as school term dates and the number of days remaining until the January 15 on time application deadline.

“It is therefore too early to speculate on the final application outcome, particularly as 40 per cent of all applicants apply between mid December and the January 15 deadline.

“The University of Northampton is confident that it will continue to see healthy recruitment given its track record on the employability of its graduates.”
