Six teachers in Northamptonshire were dismissed from their jobs between 2008 and 2011 following complaints about sexual or physical abuse.
Figures released by Northamptonshire County Council showed more than 180 allegations of sexual or physical abuse were made against teachers in the county during the same period. Those complaints led to four teachers being dismissed in 2008/09, one in 2009/10 and one in 2010/11.
A spokesman for the authority said the dismissals had arisen because of the vigilance of the council.
She said: “The county council takes all complaints and allegations against members of school staff very seriously.
“Where the county council is the human resources provider to a school, the authority provides support to ensure the appropriate policy and procedure is applied to ensure such complaints and allegations are investigated thoroughly and the appropriate action is taken if necessary. This could include dismissal.
“All teaching staff are expected to adhere to their professional code of conduct and all staff are expected to be fully compliant with safeguarding policies and practice.”
The figures were revealed after a Freedom of Information request was made to the county council.
Statistics provided by the authority showed that of the 183 teachers who had complaints made against them between 2008 and 2011, only three have remained in work for the council. They also show that in 2010/11, two complaints of physical or sexual abuse were also made against non-teaching staff, although records of whether anybody was disciplined are not held.
The council has not released details which show where any of the staff were employed or who any of the dismissed teachers were. It has also not revealed how many of the complaints were physical or how many were sexual.
