Smith delighted after Northamptonshire announce profit

David Smith believes that the focus can now turn to increasing commercial income following the announcement of a profit for the trading year to September 30, 2012.

A significant cost-cutting exercise - £376,000 was slashed from the costs - resulted in a profit of £22,900 and chief executive Smith is of the opinion that the stability created will prove to be of benefit to the club.

He said: “We’re delighted after what was obviously a difficult year.

“Not many counties will be able to show a profit and we’ve managed to get the finances back in line.

“We recognise the challenges ahead and our aim is to always be in profit although we’re not really judged on how much profit we make but it was key to get the costs under control and now we can drive forward from a solid platform.”

And Smith feels there will be a greater opportunity to increase the commercial income this year with a far more sympathetic Twenty20 calendar and the visit of the Australian tourists for a two-day fixture in August.

He added: “We recognise the need to increase our income in this area and there is greater scope to do so as opposed to last year.

“We’re hoping for a drier summer, as everyone is, and there is a platform to build on.

“We’re now in a position where we don’t have to go cutting any more costs and we can put the focus on to being successful both on the pitch and off it.”
