An estimated 25 jobs are at risk in Northamptonshire after video and game rental company Blockbuster announced it had entered administration.
The chain employs 4,190 staff across 528 stores nationwide. In Northampton there are stores in Wellingborough Road and Kingsthorpe.
Deloitte, the accountancy firm which will now take over the day-to-day running of the firm, said Blockbuster had been affected by competition from internet-based film services.
It added that stores, including ones in Kettering, Daventry and Wellingborough, will keep trading while the administrators try to find a buyer.
A spokesman for Deloitte said he did not have precise figures for the number of staff who could be affected in Northamptonshire, but said each store had an average of five people working in it.
Blockbuster is the latest UK High Street firm to go into administration since Christmas.
It follows the collapse of camera shop chain Jessops and music store giant HMV in the last week.
