The Cobblers’ npower League Two clash with Burton Albion will be played this afternoon after an army of volunteer supporters turned up at Sixfields to clear the pitch of snow.

The club had appealed for fans to turn up at 8am, armed with shovels and wheelbarrows, and they did just that despite the freezing temperatures.

Their effort has been rewarded with the match being given the go-ahead, after referee Darren Bond inspected the pitch under the covers that have been in place all week, and declared the surface playable.

The club also hired a snow plough to clear the car parks, and with no problems on the surrounding roads, the match will be played.

A statement from the Cobblers read: “Match referee Darren Bond has inspected the pitch at Sixfields and Northampton Town’s game with Burton Albion is ON.

“Kick off is at 3pm.

“The roads and approach ways to Sixfields are clear, as are the car parks, and buses are running as normal.

“We would like to say a very big thank you to all who helped clear snow from the pitch this morning.”

As it stands, the Cobblers is only one of three league two games to beat the freeze, with those at Wycombe Wanderers and York City also still on.
