Nearly double the number of people were arrested for drink driving in the fourth week of Northamptonshire Police’s summer campaign compared to the same time last year.

The month long anti-drive campaign which was launched at the start of June was aimed at increasing awareness of drink driving and the consequences.

Between June 20 and June 26 Northamptonshire Police arrested 20 people for drink driving. None were between 7am and noon.

Of the 20, five were between 17 and 24-years-old and in total 14 of the 20 have been charged.

During the same period in 2011, only 12 people were arrested and 11 charged.

Chief Insp Dave Lawson, from Northamptonshire Police’s specialist operations, said: “The figures show an increase in the number of people arrested for drink driving compared with the same time period last year.

“What we really need to reinforce are the dangers of doing this both in terms of the driver but also passengers, other motorists and pedestrians.

“We have charged 19 people who tested over the drink drive limit. The consequences are serious. Our message is simple – do not drink and drive.

“Officers will be continuing to carry out high profile roadside checks throughout the county as well as targeted and intelligence-led operations. These checks will be taking place at all times of the day and night.”

Anyone who suspects a driver in Northamptonshire of getting behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs can call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174 615.
