The number of official jobseekers in Northampton has fallen for the third period in a row.

Latest statistics for Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) claimants in December showed there were 5,429, a drop of 334 people since September.

The numbers have been falling since March 2012, when the overall JSA claimants numbered 6,118. From November to December alone the figures dropped by 141 claimants.

Nationally, the December statisics put the rate of unemployment in the town at 0.1 per cent over the British average.

Menawhile, fast food chain McDonalds has said it plans to create 110 new jobs in Northamptonshire in 2013, including via a new branch somewhere in the county.

Perry Akhtar, franchisee for McDonalds restaurants in The Drapery and the Grosvenor Centre, said: “The majority of our roles will go to hourly paid crew members, who can benefit from the flexibility and pick the shifts that best suit their lifestyles.

“The high level of jobs in the county is not only because a new store is due to open in Northamptonshire this year, but also jobs which will be created at our existing restaurants.”
