Alex Ward is ready to re-launch his assault on the world’s top 250 players after springing an upset at the Aegon GB-Pro Series Glasgow event last week.
The 22-year-old Northampton-born player suffered a series of injury setbacks in 2012, but bounced back to form by winning a $10k tournament in Thailand in November before then losing in the final in a comparable event in Cambodia.
In Thailand he defeated Russian player Mikhail Fufygin in the final 6-3, 6-1 but his final defeat in Cambodia was by a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 margin against Russian born New Zealander Artem Sitak.
Last week, Ward began a series of six weeks playing in England and Scotland by defeating former world ranked number 117 Austrian Martin Fischer at the Scotstoun Tennis Centre, a player who was seeded at three for the main draw event, by a 6-4, 7-5 scoreline.
Unseeded himself, Ward then went on to play American Eric Quigley in the second round but was unable to replicate his first round victory against one of the USA’s top collegiate players, which produced a 6-1, 7-5 defeat.
Ward’s dad Richard, now based himself in the Borders, said: “It was good to get the chance to see Alex play last week. He now has a run of competitions in this country at Preston, Sheffield and The Wirral before having a break for a couple of weeks.”
The first of those events was kicking off in Preston this week.
