Latest plans showing what Northampton’s £20 million new railway station will look like have been revealed.
Work on the development is due to start in spring this year and be completed by summer 2014.
The latest plans for the development show the new building will be twice as big as the town’s current station.
The leader of Northamptonshire County Council, Councillor Jim Harker (Con, Kettering Rural) said: “Transforming Northampton Castle Station is a key project in helping boost the economy in Northampton.
“For many, the railway station will be their first introduction to Northamptonshire so it’s absolutely essential that this gateway gives a first-rate impression.”
He was backed by the leader of Northampton Borough Council, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm), who added: “When people arrive in our town we want them to feel they are in a place that is welcoming, forward thinking and open for business.
“This is another exciting project that shows how Northampton is alive with culture, heritage and enterprise.
“The new railway station will be good for residents that commute, create the right impression for visitors to our town and supports our ambitious business community and the Waterside Enterprise Zone.”
The plans have been revealed on a new website Northampton Station. A display of the development is also due to be held at the Grosvenor Centre from Monday, February 4, to Saturday, February 9.
The MP for Northampton South, Brian Binley, who has pushed the Government for the funding for the new station, said: “We battled hard to get the money from the Department of Transport, not least because the new station is so important to the Enterprise Zone, which will create many new opportunities for today’s generation and those who follow.”
