STARS from Northampton Town Football Club swapped the training pitch for the opticians in the latest stage of their pre-season training.

The Cobblers players visited Tompkins Knight & Son Optometrists in Kingsley Road, Northampton on Sunday morning.

While there, they underwent a number of checks on their vision to make sure their eyes were fit for the coming season.

Optician Brian Tompkins said: “Testing footballers’ eyes before they play is becoming more and more common.

“The eyes have a massive role to play in a football match because they lead everything that goes on on the pitch.”

Among the first players to have their eyes tested was new striker, Clive Platt, who performed well in the vision tests.

The team’s physio, Stuart Barker, said: “We did have one player who when he was going up to head the ball missed it a couple of times so the manager said we should get his eyes checked and we found out he did have a problem.

“So we thought we’d get the whole team checked and we’ve now got two members of the team who wear contacts while they’re playing.”
