Northampton School for Boys moved to within a whisker of a dream final at Twickenham after a “titanic” win last night in the Daily Mail Cup.
The Billing Road school’s under-18s side defeated King’s School, in Macclesfield, in the last eight of the competition in a nail biting contest that ended 3-0.
It leaves NSB just one match away from the final, which will be held at Twickenham in front of an anticipated crowd of 30,000.
Director of Rugby at the school, and first team coach, Mark Lee, described the win as “heroic”.
Speaking to the Chronicle & Echo this morning, he said: “It was a titanic struggle between a very big side from King’s School, Macclesfield, but we were technically good and our defence was nothing short of heroic.
“It is fantastic, because we are a state school and to do this as a state school is an outstanding achievement, especially when a lot of the schools we play against have scholarships.”
The win means the school has now made the semi-finals of the competition three times since 2006, twice at under-15 level and once at under-18.
Mr Lee added: “I think we will let them enjoy last night’s win, we will find out who we are playing in the semi-final, and we will then go into it with the attitude we have nothing to lose now and everything to gain.
“We will throw the kitchen sink at it.”
He added: “It is amazing for the school, there must have been 700 people there last night and there were boys coming back from 10 years ago. Everyone at school is smiling today.”
The match had to be stopped in the first half due to a serious leg injury to a player from King’s School, requiring medical attention and an ambulance.
