Rory Seymour scored two tries as Old Northamptonians sealed a league double over Peterborough at Billing
Road.

ONs built up a 30-15 lead with 20 minutes still to go, but failed to increase their advantage as the contest meandered to the final whistle.

ONs kicked off playing up the slope and into the strong wind and it was Peterborough who made all of the early running with full back Vernon Horne going over for an unconverted try.

The ONs gradually came into the game when Sam Howes drove over from close range and it was Howes again who set up the second try with a rampaging run before Tom Goodman finished.

The visitors hit back and a succession of penalties took them close but despite being down to 14 following a sin binning, the ONs held out and at the other end Seymour went over for their third try.

As the break approached Boro debutant Joe Andressi landed a penalty after the ONs had infringed at the breakdown, receiving second yellow card, but Alex Rose replied on the stroke of half-time for an 18-8 lead. The bonus point score quickly followed the restart when the ONs’ scrum twice drove the Peterborough eight backwards, the third attempt resulting in the award of a penalty try and simple conversion for Rose.

Boro centre Jonny Beale touched down and Andressi added the two points to again reduce the deficit to 10 points before the home side turned the ball over in midfield and a fine run by Jordan Brew and swift transfer put Seymour away for his second and the ONs’ fifth try.

Scouts hold out to see off BBOB

Old Scouts held on to come out on top of a tough Midlands Two (East) league clash at Northampton BBOB.

From the start, Scouts were trying hard to get control of the ball, with the hosts, enjoying more of the possession, and after just five minutes, Ross Bowden ran through following a well worked midfield move, under the posts. Captain Olly James converted.

With the next 20 minutes being reasonably even, both sides were attacking well, however handling errors, seemed to be the common factor for both sides.

An Adam Frost penalty on 25 minutes got Scouts onto the scoresheet and then as the half came to a close, BB were reduced to 14 men when Phil Bull was sent to the sin bin.

But Scouts were unable to capitalise on the player
shortage and the half finished 7-3.

The second period saw Scouts take more shape it their performance, with phases becoming more stable and good hands allowing them to take control of the game.

After 10 minutes into the half and following many forward drives down the left-hand side, Emilio Giron Walsh crashed over from just five yards out and with Frost adding the extras Scouts moved into the lead for the first time in the match.

Ten minutes later, and with confidence appearing to return to the Scouts, Aaron Ashmore hit a great line off his left wing following good work in midfield by Tom Powell and again Frost added the extras.

BB immediately attacked from the re-start and were awarded a penalty allowing them to reduce the gap with a further three points from James.

However, Scouts answered back straight away with a Frost penalty after the hosts held onto the ball on the floor from the kick off and with this stretched their lead to 20-10.

As the game entered into the final 10 minutes, BB took advantage of a kick and chase and scored out wide through player-coach Ben Mann to at least secure BBOB a losing bonus point as Scouts held on for the win.

S&L too quick for beaten heathens

Heathens made a disappointing return to action following the weather-enforced postponements when they leaked 50 points to a much quicker Stewarts &Lloyds outfit at home on The Racecourse in the Courage Best League of the Wells Bombardier merit tables. Heathens’ tries came from Dan Stonehouse, Pete Evans and John Marlow. Ash Brown converted one.
This weekend Heathens travel to Olney IIIs.

Mens Own pay tribute to a club legend

Mens Own secured a hard-fought 18-15 win over Deepings on an emotional day at Ashton.
Prior to the kick-off there was a minute’s silence to respect the passing away of club president Jim Attwood.
And Attwood would have been pleased with the game that followed, with tries from Craig Wilson, Stuart Brown, Ian Percival. Matt Brace kicked a penalty to ensure Own go level on points with Deepings in the table.
