A man has died in hospital after collapsing beside a busy Northampton road shortly after police arrested a woman he had reportedly been fighting with.
Officers were called to East Park Parade at 5.55pm yesterday after a 999 call was made to report of a fight between a man and a woman.
During the process of arresting a 47-year-old woman for acting in an aggressive manner, the 53-year-old man collapsed.
Officers conducted first aid and the man was taken to Northampton General Hospital for treatment. However, he later died.
The cause of his death is being investigated.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Lingley, said police are also investigating the possibility the man was trying to prevent the woman from walking in the road.
He said: “Officers arrived at the incident within five minutes of receiving the call and were in the process of arresting the woman when the man collapsed.
“After conducting first aid, he was taken to Northampton General Hospital for treatment but sadly died.
“The woman was also taken to Northampton General Hospital, however, she was later taken into custody at the Criminal Justice Centre.
“It is vitally important that we establish the full facts of what happened during this incident and we would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or who may have seen the woman in the road prior to it.”
