The success of Great Britain’s cyclists has led to an upsurge in people cycling in Northampton.
Amateur cyclists in the town have been inspired by the performances of Bradley Wiggins has won the Tour De France and an Olympic gold medal and Chris Hoy who bagged his fifth Olympic gold in the team sprint in the Velodrome last night.
Dave Turner, of Pitsford Cycles, said: “We have definitely been busier than we were before.
“The success of people like Bradley Wiggins is being spoken about.
“The interest is coming from a mixture of beginners and people who are already keen cyclists. We do seem to have an influx of people coming in who have never tried cycling before.”
Chris Box, a member of the Northampton Road Cycling Club, said he had noticed more cyclists on the roads in Northampton in the past few months.
He said: “I’ve noticed quite a lot of people out on their bikes on weekend.
“I started because I enjoyed going out and getting some fresh air and then I just got the bug for it.”
Mr Box is one of six men who are planning to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End in nine days to raise money for Cynthia Spencer Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society.
