Police have revealed a woman who died in a horror crash on the M1 in Northamptonshire yesterday had stopped on the hard shoulder moments before a van crashed into her car.

The 64-year-old woman, who police have confirmed was a passenger in the car and is from Nottinghamshire, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash on the southbound carriageway, one mile away from Watford Gap services.

Police say the Mercedes C Class car was stationary on the hard shoulder when a Mercedes Sprinter van crashed into it.

Both the driver of the Mercedes, a 70-year-old woman, and a second passenger, a 70-year-old man, both from Nottinghamshire, remain in hospital suffering from “life-threatening injuries”.

The van driver, a 30-year-old man from Reading, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving yesterday.

He has been released on bail.

The crash saw the road closed for some time for air ambulance paramedics to treat the casualties.

A police spokesman said: “Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward to a fatal road traffic collision which took place on the M1 yesterday afternoon.

“The collision took place at 1.20pm, on the M1 southbound, about one mile south of Watford Gap services.

“It involved a white Mercedes Sprinter van, being driven by a 30-year-old man, from Reading, and a silver Mercedes C Class, being driven by a 70-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire.

“The Mercedes car was stationary on the hard shoulder when the collision took place.

“A 64-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire, who was a passenger in the C Class, died as a result of the collision. The driver and a 70-year-old man from Nottinghamshire who was also a passenger, sustained life threatening injuries.

“The driver of the Sprinter van was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.”
