Plans for a development of 750 houses on vacant land in Northampton town centre have been displayed to the public despite the fact they may never come to fruition.
Two planning proposals have been drawn up for the Avon Nunn Mills site, off Bedford Road, by the landowners Avon Cosmetics, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey in partnership with the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).
The first involves the University of Northampton creating a new town centre campus on the site.
But, in case this plan does not happen, a proposal to build 750 houses, 10,000ft of business space and community facilities on the site has also been put out to public consultation.
The plans for the housing scheme were displayed in the Grosvenor Centre from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and will also be on display in the Old White Hart, Cotton End, on Monday, February 18 from 3pm to 8pm.
Carly Tinkler, project director for Pegasus who have drawn up the plans, said members of the public had been positive about the plans to develop the Nunn Mill site.
She said: “People have said they see it as a really good site for housing and are equally positive about the housing plan or the uni relocation. I think people just want to see something happen.
“Some people have said it would be a really good site for housing as it is by the river and they would be able to walk into town.”
Ms Tinkler said a lot of people also expressed an interest in the preservation of some of the archaeology of the area including some pillboxes from World War Two which are on the land.
