Brewing giant Carlsberg has blamed bad weather last year for a slight drop in beer sales in the UK.

Globally the firm, which has its UK base in Northampton, reported net revenue growth of three per cent.

But in the UK, the firm saw sales drop, despite a summer of sporting events supporting beer sales.

The firm’s annual report said: “The UK market declined by five per cent and our UK volumes were down by three per cent as the poor weather during the summer more than offset the positive impact from the Diamond Jubilee and Euro 2012.

“However, our market share improved to 15.3 per cent driven by particularly good performance in the on-trade, which benefited from our expanded portfolio offering, while our off-trade market share declined slightly.”

Commenting on the results recorded by the company globally, Carlsberg chief executive, Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, added: “The group delivered a good

performance in 2012, despite a challenging Western European beer market.

“In 2013, we will continue to drive our commercial agenda across all three regions, invest in our brands, and ensure that our sales and marketing capabilities are best in class.”
