Almost £7 million is to be spent on improvements to roads in Northampton town centre.

The Government announced the £6.8 million funding package this morning.

It will see improvements made to junctions around Northampton’s railway station. The work is designed to boost access to Northampton’s enterprise zone, where it is hoped a number of new offices will be built.

Welcoming the funding, the Conservative MP for Northampton North, Michael Ellis, said: “This is a real sign of the Government’s confidence in Northampton.

“Millions of pounds are already being invested in the new railway station and the enterprise zone and throughout the town. That can only be good news for jobs.

“And it’s a real sign of confidence when, in these difficult economic times, the Government is prepared to spend millions in Northampton.”

The Government has said the money for roads in the town will “increase the capacity of the congested southern inner ring road”.

Work will be carried out on junctions at Black Lion Hill, Green Street, Gas Street and two junctions on Towcester Road.

Work on the scheme is due to begin this month and be completed by April 2016.

It is one of 10 road improvement schemes across the country which the Government announced this morning.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “Tackling bottlenecks on the highway network will help keep get the country moving and the economy growing.

“I want to see this work underway and shovels in the ground as soon as possible.”
