The headteacher of Northampton School for Boys has said he is really proud of the players and coaching staff who helped the school make it to Twickenham.
NSB were beaten 27-17 by Dulwich College in the final of the Daily Mail cup after battling through six rounds of the prestigious school rugby competition.
Mike Griffiths, headteacher of NSB, said the players had showed a tremendous attitude to get to the final.
He said: “The Dulwich team were huge but I thought our boys really stood up to the mark. They tackled really well and they keep coming back when they were behind.
“The players and coaching staff have really done us proud and have done a fantastic job to get to the level they did.
“We were the last state school in the final eight of the competition so it shows how hard it is to compete with the fee paying schools.”
Eight coach loads of fans travelled down to Twickenham yesterday to support the team as well as hundreds of others who made their way down independently.
Throughout the game loud cries of ‘NSB, NSB’ could be heard ringing around the stadium.
Oliver Hartfield, who scored NSB’s two tries, said: “We’ve had a lot of support from the whole of Northampton and we’d like to thank all the people that got behind us.
“We heard the crowd cheering us on during the match and it was amazing.”
Mark Lee, NSB head coach, said: “We’d like to thank all the supporters for coming to watch us. The players will feel a sense of pride at knowing that they have played at Twickenham in front of such support.”
