Heavy snow has caused problems on the roads in Northamptonshire today.
The M1 between junction 18 near Crick and junction 20 was closed in both directions this morning after a lorry crashed into the central barrier shortly after 3am and caused a diesel spillage.
The southbound carriageway has now reopened but the northbound carriageway is not expected to reopen until later this afternoon.
The M6 southbound from junction 1 to the M1 was also closed but this is expected to reopen in the next hour.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “Road users may wish to consider alternative routes and to allow extra journey time to reach their destination.”
Many of the rural roads in the county have also become impassable due to the heavy snow overnight.
The A428 near East Haddon is closed in both directions and Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris posted a picture on Twitter of some large snow drifts on the road between Pitsford and Moulton.
London Midland also said this morning that trains through Northampton were running half an hour late.
Mike Lewis, manager of Pitsford Hall Weather Station, said in his latest forecast that it would be a “bitterly cold day” in the county with temperatures struggling to go above -1C, and falling overnight to -3C.
Mr Lewis said no snow is forecast in the county for Monday and there should be “some glimmers of sunshine” with temperatures at 1C, falling overnight to -2C.
He said: “The cold weather will continue on into the week. There will be some snow showers working in from the east coast, but few of these will reach as far inland as Northampton. The wind, still easterly, will tend to ease slightly becoming gentle for the most part.”
