Eight county golfers suffered disappointment in the English men’s Amateur Championships as they missed out on the knockout stages in Cumbria.

With the best 64 players from the 36 holes of strokeplay going through to the next round, Kyson Lloyd, Ryan Evans and Harry Woan came closest to qualifying.

Lloyd, who won the Lincolnshire Poacher last month, carded an opening 74 but two dropped shots in the last three holes in a second round 75 meant he missed out on countback in joint 62nd place.

Wellingborough team-mate Evans carded a double bogey at the 36th hole to miss out by two, while Overstone teenager Woan finished four shots off the pace after finishing with a triple bogey and a bogey.

Whittlebury’s Jean-Michel Hall (153), Staverton Park’s county champion Miles Mudge (154), Farthingstone duo Paul Hodgkiss (164) and Sam Buss (165) and Wellingborough’s Ryan Connolly (NR) also missed the cut.

Meanwhile, Northamptonshire amateur Charley Hull made it three cuts in three pro tournaments this year in the Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour at Killeen Castle GC.

The 16-year-old, who made the cut in the Kraft Nabisco in the US and the Turkish Open, bagged six birdies in a one-under-par 71, added a second round 76, before compiling a round of 73 on the final day.

Hull grabbed a share of 18th place to claim the Philomena Garvey Trophy as top amateur.
