A man who stabbed his former friend because “that is what you do during fights” has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison.

James Moore, aged 23, who used to serve in the Army, stabbed his ex-pal in the shoulder during a fight outside his flat in Duston.

He was sentenced this week at Northampton Crown Court after being convicted in a trial last month.

The court heard Moore was having a party at his flat in July 2011 when his former friend, Craig Markie, rang an ex-girlfriend, who was at Moore’s party.

Moore began shouting in the background, prompting Mr Markie to send him a text message to say he was coming round to “see who the big man is”. The pair then had a fight in front of the flat.

Mr Markie realised afterwards he had been stabbed in the shoulder and to the back.

He told how blood was “gushing” from the wounds.

Moore was convicted by a majority verdict at Northampton Crown Court of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. He was also convicted of having an article with a blade.

He was jailed for five years, nine months for the first offence and two years, concurrently, for the second offence.

A judge has blasted James Moore’s attitude as “ugly and unpleasant”.

Sentencing him on Thursday, Judge Rupert Mayo said: “I sentence you on the basis that he made the first move when you went outside. The problem is you went outside when you knew there was bad blood between you and you took with you a knife. I am satisfied you took the knife out of the flat, concealed it, and that you took it with the intention of using it.”
