Hard work paid off for Bedford Athletic as they saw off Towcestrians 29-7 in the snow to move to the top of Midlands One East.
The game went ahead thanks to Bedford’s astonishing clearance of the snow, which forced the postponement of most games in the midlands area.
In the first half Tows had to battle hard through the conditions as the snow lashed down.
Tows held out against the hosts until an infringement three-quarters of the way through the half allowed the hosts to take the lead with a penalty.
Just before the whistle for half-time, Tows conceded the first try of the game through a ferocious lineout drive.
After the break, Athletic’s qualities began to show as their pinpoint accurate kicks in the freezing conditions successfully delivered them two tries.
A mistake from Tows’ fullback and winger led to the critical bonus-point try for the hosts.
Tows then took a rare trip into Athletic’s half and their efforts were rewarded with a try from Eugene Baxter to end the game.
Meanwhile, Tows were handed a walkover in scheduled Lewis Shield game against Casuals on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Tows play a rearranged league game against Spalding (3pm).
