Music fanatics queued from 4.30am this morning in Northampton to buy limited edition vinyls.

The releases, by the likes of David Bowie and Chas and Dave, marked Record Store Day, which celebrates independent music shops.

Chris Kent, owner of Spun Out in Gold Street said: “Record stores are so popular because there’s so much personal history behind them. People have bought records all their lives and get inspired musically and fashion-wise by coming to them every week.

“There’s not many stores on the high street where the whole of your life is empathised with.

“Most shops try to sell you things you don’t need but people find that record shops just get them.”

As well as the special edition records, which customers were restricted to buying only one each, there is live music in the store throughout today.

Vinyl Underground, inside Watts The Furnishers, in Abington Street, is also celebrating the day with a live in-store set by local artist Adapta.

Chron readers have been sharing anecdotes from record shops.

Lindsay Moore said: “My husband [who worked in a record store] says he regularly used to get people come in and they would just hum random notes and ask him if he knew which album it was, or say they knew the album colour was blue - and that was it.”
