Same again for County in Canterbury

Having made an excellent start to the season, Northamptonshire will name an unchanged XI for their encounter with Kent on Wednesday.

Three games into the year, Stephen Peters’ side are sitting proudly at the top of the second tier standings with as many victories as they managed to garner throughout the entire 2012 campaign.

And with the fitness of his charges holding up, Peters says that the intention is for continuation rather than change.

He said: “The bowlers have had three days off and there are no problems so we’ll go with the same team.

“There’s a natural break next week and we haven’t got another Championship game for nine days so there will be a chance for a bit of rest.

“I know that the lads in the second team have been playing some good cricket and I’m confident that whoever comes in will do a good job.

“We’re not far from needing to change things round a bit but we’ll think about that in the next week or so.”

As for Kent, Peters is anticipating a contest that could stretch the full four days.

He added: “The weather’s been reasonably dry and it’s normally a decent pitch down there.

“It could well be four days of hard graft, especially in the field and they’re a side with a number of very experienced players.

“The likes of Rob Key and Darren Stevens are very good players with good records and they’ll make us work for everything.

“I’m expecting a big test and it’ll show us how far we’ve come as a side.”

And confidence in the camp will be sky-high after the seven-wicket success in Bristol, a victory that Peters found particularly satisfying.

“It was very, very pleasing,” he said.

“it was a game that we felt we could, and should, be winning and if we want to be challenging then they are the kind of games that we need to win.

“What pleased me the most was that the attitude was spot on and the lads took nothing for granted.

“The third day was the most satifying of the year so far because we had to work all day for the 10 wickets and that kind of performance, where we had to graft, will stand us in good stead.”

Northants: Peters, Coetzer, Sales, Wakely, Newton, Hall, Middlebrook, Murphy, Willey, Copeland, Crook, Stone.
