Wakely keen to pass the century barrier

Alex Wakely feels that once he makes another first-class century there will be no stopping him.

The Northamptonshire number four made a good 88 in the seven-wicket defeat of Gloucestershire last week but he fell a dozen short of the coveted three figures.

Despite a respectable record in the four-day game - Wakely passed 3,000 runs in the game at Bristol - the 24-year-old has only made two centries in 105 innings which is a poor return for someone with his ability.

But although he was disappointed not to convert his 20th career half-century into the next milestone, he doesn’t feel number three is too far away.

He said: “I’ve felt good all season and have been hitting the ball well in practice.

“So even though I hadn’t scored any runs before Bristol I had enough confidence to think that I was going to play well.

“I would’ve liked to have scored a hundred but once I get there again then I’ll be away, I don’t doubt that.”

The first month of the season is never the easiest time for a top order batsman, the ever-present dampness sees to that, but Wakely believes that patience is the key to any potential success.

He added: “I’m a bit more sheltered at number four than the lads who have to open and it does get a lot easier once you’re through the new ball.

“That’s always my target, whenever I get in, and I try to do it as often as possible.

“There is movement at this time of year but there is no reason why you can’t score runs if you stick in.”
