Newton faces a lay-off despite cameo performance

Northamptonshire head coach David Ripley expects top order batsman Rob Newton to miss at least a couple of weeks through injury.

Newton damaged his groin on the first day of the LV= County Championship clash with Kent at Canterbury and can only play a peripheral part in the rest of the game.

Once the match has finished Newton - who actually scored an unbeaten 21 batting at 11 in the County’s first innings - will get the injury properly assessed but Ripley expects him to be out for around a fortnight.

“We’ve not had it scanned yet so it is difficult to tell how bad it is,” Ripley explained.

“He spent all day off the field yesterday and only batted at 11 for us.

“He thinks there is a small tear in there and has spent most of his time here with Barry (Goudriaan, club physio).

“It will hopefully improve and he might be able to play more of a part in the rest of the game.

“But my gut feeling is that he will probably be out for a couple of weeks.”

Northamptonshire closed the second day of the Championship game 26 runs ahead of Kent - thanks in the main to a 54-run partnership for the 10th wicket between Newton and the in-form Steven Crook.
