A post mortem has found Donald and Mary Knight, the county businessman and his wife who were found dead at their home in Northamptonshire, both died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The body of Mary Knight, aged 77, was discovered by officers at her home near the village of Loddington, at 2.10pm on Wednesday.

After searching the remote property police then found her husband, Donald, aged 78, dead outside the property.

Following their deaths, a forensic post mortem examination took place last night at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The cause of death in both instances has been confirmed as a gunshot wound to the head.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Behan said: “I know that this tragic incident has shocked people in the local community and would like to offer reassurance that we are not seeking anyone else in connection with it.

“My thoughts and condolences are with the family at this difficult time.”

The family of the couple released a statement through police yesterday, which said: “We are devastated by this tragic news and wish to thank people for their kind words.

“Donald and Margaret were a couple who loved each other’s company. They were lovely parents and grandparents whose passing is a massive loss to our lives.”

Mr Knight’s family ran Knights of Old – an international haulage company based in nearby Kettering – for many years.

He held the position of chairman at the distribution company until he retired 15 years ago. Another family has owned the business since.

The business was set up by one of his ancestors, William Knight, in 1865.
