Firefighters and police were called to a suspected arson attack at a derelict hospital in Northampton this evening.
Shortly after 5.30pm crews were called to the former St Edmund’s Hospital, in Wellingborough Road, following reports that a quantity of waste insulation was on fire on the ground floor.
Police were called and officers are believed to have arrested someone at the scene.
Firefighters used one hose reel to extinguish the blaze and have said the cause of the fire remain under investigation.
Earlier this year is was revealed the derelict 19th century hospital could be demolished after an application was made to remove its listed status.
St Edmund’s Hospital was built in 1836 as a workhouse for the poor and was converted into a hospital in the 1930s, before closing in 1999.
Listed building planning consent for St Edmund’s Hospital has also expired.
An application has now been made to English Heritage to remove the Grade Two Listed status from the building which, if approved, could allow developers to knock it down and construct on the site.
