The management of a community centre in Northampton is to be taken over by a Hindu charity,
Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet this week agreed to hand over Weston Favell Parish Hall to the Indian Hindu Welfare Organisation (IHWO).
The council’s cabinet member for communities, Councillor Brandon Eldred (Con, East Hunsbury) said: “They’re a very well established community group who put a lot of good work into the area.
“So I’m pleased that they will run Weston Favell Parish Hall on our behalf.”
The IHWO was set up in 1996. It runs a number of popular events in Northampton, including the annual Diwali Festival of Lights.
It was based at Rectory Farm Farmhouse until 2012.
Weston Favell Parish Hall will be the charity’s new base and will be where their user groups and management committee meet.
All the groups who currently use the building will also be retained and it is hoped more groups will be encouraged to use the facility.
The borough council has granted the IHWO a lease on the building until August 2020.
The move is the latest in a series made by the council, which has appointed 14 community groups to run centres around the town since July 2011.
