A yachtsman who fell into Pitsford Reservoir was rescued by a fisherman amid a large-scale operation launched by the emergency services.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports that a person had fallen from a yacht into the reservoir just before 3.20pm yesterday.

Fire engines from Moulton and The Mounts and water rescue vehicles from Mereway and Wellingborough were scrambled, but the man, who is in his 60s, had been rescued before they arrived.

Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance also attended and the on-board doctor treated the casualty at the scene, also assisting with the rescue.

The man was suffering from hypothermia as he had been in the water for more than half an hour.

It was a particularly busy afternoon for the fire service, as it was also called to a car fire at Morrison’s in Victoria Promenade, Northampton, at almost exactly the same time.

A Jaguar XJR had a fire in the engine compartment, due to a suspected faulty alternator. A crew from Earls Barton was sent to deal with the incident as the Northampton crews were on route to Pitsford.
