Almost eight out of 10 Northamptonshire residents who have a foreign mother tongue speak a good standard of English, according to figures released today.

Latest figures from the 2011 Census show there were 39,994 people in the county over the age of three whose main language was not English, about six per cent of the population.

Of those, just under 77 per cent said they could speak English ‘well’ or ‘very well’.

A total of 20 per cent, or 8,095, said they could not speak English very well, with just under three per cent, which is 1,161 people, unable to speak English at all.
