South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom effectively abstained from voting on the Government’s plans to legalise gay marriage last night, as two right-wing county colleagues opposed the bill.

Mrs Leadsom voted both ways on the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill at its Third Reading last night, while Kettering MP Philip Hollobone and Wellingborough MP Peter Bone were among the 128 Tories who voted against it.

There were 117 Conservatives who voted in favour of the bill, including Northampton North MP Michael Ellis and Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris.

Corby Labour MP, Andy Sawford, voted in favour of the bill, while Northampton South MP Brian Binley did not vote.

The legislation will go to the House of Lords after the half-term recess where it is expected to attract fierce opposition from peers.

The result is a slight improvement on the vote at second reading, when 175 MPs opposed the plans.

Former Tory minister Tim Loughton attempted to derail the bill, after putting forward an amendment extending civil partnerships to straight couples.
