Pub famed for horse burgers to serve up zebra steaks

A village pub which gave new legs to the horsemeat scandal by serving up horse burgers has now added zebra steaks to its menu.

The George at Tiffield is now serving up another exotic meat in response to weekly calls from customers, asking if it was still selling horse.

And as well as deciding to bring the horse back, it is now serving up zebra steaks for a limited time, and is also selling scorpion lollies for dessert.

The meat comes from a firm in north Derbyshire, which sources the horse from France and the zebra from South Africa.

In February, the horse burgers were so popular that people were coming from as far afield as London to try them.

Landlord Russell Proctor said: “We had to go out and get a second lot of horse meat, for what was only supposed to be a two-day event.

“It ended up being for a week, and ever since then we have had at least two phone calls a week asking if we are still doing the horse.

“The zebra adds a new element. It is a slightly denser meat. Taste-wise it is closer to horse than beef, being a bit sweeter, and it is slightly more chewable.

“Following on from horse, we were always being asked what other meats we were going to do next.

“I heard another pub in Essex was doing it, but there is no-one else in Northamptonshire doing it.”

The zebra steaks are on the menu for £12, while horse burgers are £9 and horse steaks £11.

Booking is recommended, by calling 01327 350587 or visiting the pub’s website.
